Buddha Head

By the sixth century, Buddhism had become a powerful presence in northern China. Along the trade routes travelled not only goods, but scriptures, craftsmen and sacred images. This marble head probably once belonged to a monumental statue in a temple or monastic complex.

Lowered eyelids, gently drawn lips and strict symmetry create an atmosphere of inward stillness. The coiled hair and elongated earlobes are not portrait details, but signs of an enlightened being that would have been immediately legible to a devotee.

The sculpture is compelling precisely because it brings traditions together: an image born in India has acquired the clarity and restraint of Chinese stone carving. It makes the Silk Roads visible as channels for ideas as well as trade.
