Composition with Blue, Red, Yellow and Black

By 1922, Piet Mondrian had arrived at a language of radical clarity: verticals, horizontals and primary colours. The picture may look simple at first, yet no line and no coloured rectangle has been placed casually.

Its tension lies in the exchange between occupied and open space. Red, blue and yellow cover only a small part of the canvas; the white fields are equally active. Asymmetry does not disturb the balance—it keeps it alive.
