The Mamluks: 270 Works Across Continents

Bringing together more than 270 works from 34 institutions in 13 countries, this exhibition presented the Mamluk world not as a display of isolated treasures, but as a civilisation that connected Egypt, Syria and the great Mediterranean trade routes between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Manuscripts, inlaid metalwork, glass, textiles and architectural fragments evoked court life, faith, craftsmanship and international exchange. The pleasure lay in moving between materials: the transparency of enamelled glass, the cool gleam of metal and the intricate rhythm of calligraphy offered very different sensations while belonging to one artistic culture.

The exhibition made clear why the work of Mamluk craftsmen was prized far beyond the borders of the sultanate. It was a story not only of power, but of mastery, travel and artistic influence that continued to shape other regions for centuries.
