Picasso and the Human Figure

Picasso, the Figure focused on one of the defining subjects of Pablo Picasso’s career: the human body. Rather than following a strict chronology, the exhibition showed how he returned to the figure again and again, altering its proportions, mood and visual language.

Works from the Musée National Picasso-Paris, the Louvre, Mobilier National and other collections placed the artist’s early experiments beside the audacity of his later years. Face, posture and gesture became ways of speaking about intimacy, anxiety, strength and vulnerability—sometimes recognisably, sometimes on the edge of abstraction.

The exhibition ran from 21 January to 31 May 2026. Although it has now closed, its central question remains a useful companion in the permanent galleries: how can the human figure carry an emotion, an idea or an entire age?
